Description

A brown-colored mask of human proportions with traces of other colors, pierced with two suspension holes. This mask represents facial features typical of high-ranking Mochica figures, notably the large perforated eyes and nostrils, an abundant jewelry set, and an imposing headdress decorated with beaded patterns framing an image of tumi.

Masks were an important element during funerals and ceremonies that involved the upper social classes of Peru’s ancient civilizations. Belief systems held that the living or deceased wearers of such masks could embody the face represented.
